Dysphagia – Do you know the signs?

Dysphagia means having any difficulty with eating, drinking or swallowing

If you or someone you know or care for is experiencing these symptoms, they may have dysphagia.

Dysphagia can be managed, but first it needs to be found!



The Obvious signs…

  • Coughing/ Choking on food or drinks
  • Reduced appetite
  • Slowed eating pace
  • Drooling
  • Changes in face colour

The hidden signs…

  • Watering eyes
  • Weight loss
  • Recurrent chest infections
  • Gurgly voice after eating or drinking
  • Increased breathing rate

Who can you go to?

A Speech and Language Therapist can assess and help manage the difficulties associated with dysphagia. Your doctor or a nurse can arrange a referral.
