CATTS Speech Therapist Marijke explains what this group is about.
What is this group about?
Closed Facebook Support and Coaching group run by a Speech Therapist to help parents, help their child’s communication. Based on feedback, Facebook was seen as the easiest and most natural place for parents to get help as it is already widely used.
Therapy materials, homework downloads, and online training are hosted on this website, and accessed through your subscription.
Who is the group for?
Any Parent who has a child with communication difficulties, either with a confirmed diagnosis, or not. You can be a parent who feels that there is ‘something’ up with your child’s language development, or a parent who has a child with a specific diagnosis with a language disorder of any severity.
A parent can be the Number 1 common factor in a child’s success in Speech therapy.
If you know you can help your child if you just knew what to do – this group is for you. There are no restrictions. If you are a parent who is concerned about your son or daughter’s language development, you can find support here.
You know you can help your child with their speech development if you just had a guide who could help and advise you. You may be lucky to have access to Speech Therapy support every month or even week, but you know you could get better results if you had the help when you needed it. When the milestones are passed. Or when things go completely wrong and you are left wondering what to do and in limbo.
Run by CATTS founder and Speech Therapist Marijke who will give direct group support, training, advice and one one one feedback to help you help your loved one. The CATTS SLT team have almost 80 years of combined SLT experience, and our service does not restrict on severity level, or age.
If we can help you, help your child, we will.
What’s in the Group for you?
On Demand Access to a Speech Therapist
Technology has it’s advantages, but currently, there is no real substitute for talking to a Speech and Language professional to get help and advice.
This service provides that two ways through KAT, our Virtual Therapy Assistant. You get to access Kat when you join the group.
In the first instance, you can ask her questions or she will help point you in the right direction to find information as you need it.
Mainly, however, Kat allows you to ask a specific question confidentially and to contact a therapist directly.
Depending on the situation with your child, and the help you need, the therapist can help you directly via Messenger, take the discussion offline via email or WhatsApp etc. You can also share videos with the therapist of the difficulties your child has with communication via messenger, Whats-app or email as needed.
Once a plan or a set of steps to try is in place, Kat allows you to keep track of what has been discussed so you can focus on the next steps. Kat can also help you track your therapy plan each day and then give you a weekly summarized feedback which is available to you and our therapist so that they can better troubleshoot any hiccups you may be having. This allows better progress than even ‘traditional’ therapy where a parent may not be able to get in touch with the Speech Therapist to ask for help if they hit a problem until the next session.
Parent How to Videos and Lives – Talking Tuesdays
Based on group feedback and requests, each Tuesday, we host a Facebook Live video (which then is available on the group) that addresses a specific technique, tip or tool that a parent can use to help their child communicate.
Structured Steps – From Foundation to Advanced
There a a number of techniques and steps which a parent can use to help their child with communication.
The group starts with the foundations and then layers the skills and techniques so that parents can use them to help their children. Each unit covers video examples, Facebook Lives, written articles along with materials and resources for you to use which are hosted on our main website.
There are also a lot of concerns which our clinical team has heard repeated hundreds of times over the years by worried parents.
These are focused on and practical advice and step by step guides help you troubleshoot them with your child.
It can be hard to trust a new way of doing things, especially with something so important as language and communication development.
Please feel free to take a look at a small sample of what our clients have been saying about us over the last ten years or so.
This is a new approach, but run by old hands.
